San Cristobal de Las Casas, the former capital of Chiapas, is considered by many the most beautiful colonial city in Southern Mexico. It was founded by the Spanish Conqueror Diego de Mazariegos in 1528 in the Maya highlands of the state of Chiapas-formerly part of Guatemala. It is currently the cultural capital of the state and home of writers, artists and researchers. It offers travelers a rich variety of cultural, artistic and scientific activities including conferences, lectures, art exhibits, museums, live music, and cultural tours to Indigenous towns and ecological reserves. |
